ABSTRACT:
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disorder that can have serious consequences for overall health and quality of life. One of the key pathophysiological mechanisms of OSA is narrowing of the upper airway related to craniofacial anatomy, particularly in patients with hypoplastic or retruded jaws. This condition results in recurrent episodes of apnea or hypopnea during sleep, leading to intermittent hypoxia and sleep fragmentation.
Maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) is currently regarded as one of the most effective surgical treatments for OSA. By enlarging the upper airway at both the retropalatal and retroglossal levels, MMA significantly improves airway obstruction during sleep. In oral and maxillofacial surgery, patients with a retruded jaw profile are not only at increased risk for OSA, but may also achieve substantial improvement in facial aesthetics following surgery.
In this presentation, several clinical cases employing different orthognathic surgical strategies in patients with OSA will be presented to illustrate the role of MMA as an effective, stable, and long-term treatment modality.
